Camp Jobs are the Best Jobs!

We hear it over and over from our Alumni – working at camp was the single best preparation for the profession they chose later in life. The top 5 skills our seasonal staff gain from a summer or more with us:

Communication: Making phone calls to families, helping a camper through a difficult time, or working out a conflict with a co-counselor – these are all examples of camp staff learning how to communicate both challenging and positive messages to diverse audiences.

Self-Management: In the heat of a long summer day, the ability to manage one’s own time and know when to take initiative and when to let someone else lead is a valuable skill in any workplace.

Flexibility: Camp folks know better than anyone how to be adaptable and honor disappointment while helping a group adjust and move forward with enthusiasm.

Collaboration: Whether it’s working with a co-counselor to figure out how to best support a camper or planning an all-camp activity with a group, camp staff get plenty of practice negotiating ideas, respecting differing points of view and working towards a common goal.

Conceptual Skills: From planning a month’s worth of activities for small and large groups, to organizing the logistics and supplies needed for an event, camp offers a master class in honing competencies like creating thinking, problem-solving, and resource management.

Emily has joined the year-round team after five years of being a seasonal summer staff member. A local resident, Emily enjoys the changes of pace that the seasons bring to the Berkshires. In the colder months, she enjoys crocheting, cooking, and baking. In the warmer months, she enjoys hiking and exploring with her husband and three kids (when they aren’t at Chimney!) You can also find her reading or painting whenever she finds the time. In the workplace, she prides herself on her organization and drive for efficiency. Her favorite part about camp is making connections with so many friends from all over the world. Emily looks forward to getting to know more camp families and colleagues in her new role!
