Alysa is the Director for the Travel and Service Programs. Alysa grew up in Southern Vermont and began working with Becket-Chimney Corners YMCA as a trip leader for REACH and ICEP Sweden & Russia. Having enjoyed her experiences with the BCCYMCA community, she made the permanent move back to the Berkshires in 2010 as the TSP Program Director and was promoted to Director in 2015.
Alysa holds a bachelor's in Experiential Education from Hobart and William Smith Colleges with a minor in writing. Her interests in alternative education have taken her around the globe from teaching English in Laos to volunteering in a Danish kindergarten. She has lived in South America, South East Asia, and Scandinavia and has worked in a wide range of educational institutions including public after school programs, outdoor centers focusing on inner city youth, and a kayaking company where she led tours of coastal Maine. When not working, you can find Alysa cooking, making art, and walking in the woods with her dog Ruby.
Becky is the Assistant Director for the Travel & Service Programs. Becky graduated from St. Lawrence University in 2009 with a degree in Global Studies and a minor in Asian Studies. Through her travels, she has taught English as a second-language in Taiwan, volunteered on an olive grove in Sardinia, Italy, and had the pleasure of experiencing homestays in countries as diverse as China, The Gambia, and India. Becky first came to Berkshire County in 2011 and was a trip leader for ICEP China in 2012.
What makes Becky most excited about traveling is learning from shared experiences with the new people she meets, and she is enthusiastic about helping young people have that opportunity through Becket-Chimney Corners YMCA. When not working, you can find Becky trail-running, cross-country skiing, searching for wildlife around camp, and enjoying the beauty of The Berkshires.
Our Trip Leaders are a talented group of young adults with a strong passion for youth development. About 90% of our leaders have prior experience working within our organization as camp counselors, trips guides, or instructors at Berkshire Outdoor Center.
Our staff complete an application and background check, provide three references, and are interviewed by both the Director and Assistant Director of TSP. They are all certified in Wilderness First Aid and CPR and attend a nine day staff training here at our site. While having prior travel experience is an important attribute, we focus on individuals with a strong background in working with youth who have demonstrated the ability to make good decisions in the field without the immediate aid of camp support staff. While not working at camp, our staff come from a variety of career back grounds including teaching, social work, psychology, and outdoor recreation. TSP leaders love their job and most staff will stay with us for at least two to three summers.
