Becket Day Camp

In 2015, we served 221 residents of the Berkshires (out of 300 children attending 706 sessions) at our Becket Day Camp. These children participated in enriching programs and activities that encourage the healthy development of relationships, appreciation for the outdoors and outdoor activities, an understanding of the environment and an awareness of our place within the natural world, and self-confidence/self-esteem. Additionally, the social and emotional learning that takes place in these programs fostered new relationships between children who would not otherwise cross paths. Similarly, the literacy and arts components of the programs helped reduce the incidence of summer learning loss and contribute to a reduction in the Achievement Gap in the Berkshires.

In 2015, BOC provided a total of $33,112 in financial assistance to 66 families within the Berkshires, in order to attend Becket Day Camp. Additionally, we partnered (50/50) with Becket Athenaeum to provide $12,000 worth of Becket Day Camp sessions to 24 residents of Becket. We also partnered with Becket Fire Department (50/50) to provide $750 worth of Becket Day Camp sessions to 3 students of Becket-Washington School.

Springfield Summer Leadership Program & Pottenger Rising Leaders Program

Berkshire Outdoor Center collaborated with the Springfield Department of Parks, Buildings and Recreation to deliver two innovative summer day camps (enrichment experiences) for 110 Springfield youth.

These experiences are community-based day-camp programs with a mission to create future responsible youth leaders. They systematically use community engagement, problem-based learning, and a mentoring team approach to help youth improve their academic achievement in the fall, foster personal growth, and promote community involvement by empowering them for their future leadership roles. Our goal is to provide them with the tools needed to play an active role in creating healthy communities in their schools; as well as in their own family lives.

BOC obtained a total of $57,000 in grant funding, and provided $10,687 from operations in order to run these programs.
