Berkshire Outdoor Center and Becket Day Camp are now partnering with Camp Adair (YMCA of Auckland), New Zealand in an innovative staff exchange program. Open to residents of USA and residents of New Zealand who meet specific criteria, the 18 month opportunity will see employees working in three capacities, in two different nations, for two different employers.

Program Description

The International Program Instructor (IPI) position is open to 5 Americans and 5 New Zealanders, annually. The participants will work and travel together in the USA at Berkshire Outdoor Center and in New Zealand at Camp Adair. Participants will gain skills and experience in two different styles of outdoor education. Additionally, they will work with students and adults from a variety of backgrounds and cultures.

Salary & Hours

  • Participants can expect 30-45 hours per week for the duration of employment in the program.
  • Salaries are paid in local currency by the local employer and room and board will be provided in addition to salary: Berkshire Outdoor Center: US$11.00 per hour; Becket Day Camp: $300 per week; Camp Adair NZ$14.75 per hour.
  • Participants will be subject to staff hiring procedures, policies and agreements of each employer during employment

USA Participants

Eligibility/Prerequisites

  • There are a limited number of positions available in this program (5).
  • Participants are required to work a spring BOC season in order to be assessed for suitability for the program. This process is competitive.
  • Following the spring season, applicants will be selected based upon their initial application, interview, references and their work performance during the prerequisite spring season.

Timeline

This program runs for 18 months, including the initial spring prerequisite season:

  • April 15: Pre-Program Employment Evaluation - USA (for those who've never worked BOC)
  • June 15: Becket Day Camp/Summer Leadership Day Camps - USA
  • August 15: Berkshire Outdoor Center - USA
  • October 15: Camp Adair - New Zealand
  • March 15: Free time/Travel New Zealand - New Zealand
  • April 15: Berkshire Outdoor Center - USA
  • June 15: Becket Day Camp/Summer Leadership Day Camps - USA
  • August 15: Berkshire Outdoor Center - USA
  • October 15: Program Ends

Logistics and Costs

  • Any visa fees for New Zealand Working Holiday Visa will be funded by Berkshire Outdoor Center
  • Participation in this program requires a pre-payment of US$1,500, which may be paid via payroll deduction for the duration of pre-departure employment at BOC. $500 of this payment is refundable upon successful completion of the 18 month program.
  • Participants will receive free transfers to and from the airport and Camp Adair/Berkshire Outdoor Center, to be organized one month prior to the date requested

  • Airfare expenses will be the responsibility of the participant
  • Participants will receive free transfers to and from the airport and Camp Adair/Berkshire Outdoor Center

Visa Requirements for USA J-1 Visa Exchange Visitor Program - Camp Counselor

To be eligible, New Zealand participants must:

  • be sufficiently proficient in the English language to supervise and interact with American youth
  • be a post-secondary student, youth worker, teacher or individual with specialized skills
  • be at least 18 years old (must be 21 years old to work Berkshire Outdoor Center)
  • satisfy additional USA J-1 Visa Exchange Visitor Program - Camp Counselor as outlined by USA Department of State

BOC Application Process

Thank you for your interest in working seasonally with Berkshire Outdoor Center.

1. EXPRESS INTEREST IN EMPLOYMENT

Indicate your interest in working for us by completing the Expression of Interest in Employment form (continue below)

2. INTERVIEW

We will contact you for an interview if you satisfy our criteria as an applicant and if we have positions available. We will not contact you if you fail to qualify or if we have filled all positions.

3. FORMAL APPLICATION

We will invite you to formally apply for a position by sending you a link to My Staffing Pro - our third-party employment application vendor.

4. THREE REFERENCES

You must contact 3 References who will complete an online reference form for you. After they submit the reference, we will contact them to verify.

5. IDENTITY VERIFICATION

You will not be permitted to work unless you can verify your identity.

You must be willing and able to bring original forms of ID as listed on page 9 of the USCIS I-9 , in person on your first day of employment.

You can use any combination as listed on page 9 of the USCIS I-9 , but typical ID combinations include:

  • USA Passport
  • Foreign Passport AND Unexpired, Endorsed I-94
  • Driver's License AND Social Security Card
  • Driver's License AND Birth Certificate

5. PAYROLL DIRECT DEPOSIT

We only pay via direct deposit. We do not issue payroll checks or pay in cash.

You will need to provide us with either a voided check, OR:

  • Bank Routing Number
  • Bank Account Number

Please bring these numbers with you on your first day of employment. If you do not have these details, we will issue you with a Rapid Pay Card.
