David Altshuler is Executive Vice President, Global Research and Chief Scientific Officer at Vertex Pharmaceuticals in Boston with responsibility for Vertex’s research aimed at discovering new medicines and overseeing the company’s four research sites in the United States, Canada and Europe.
A physician and human geneticist, prior to joining Vertex David was one of the four founding members of the Broad Institute of Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he served as Deputy Director and Chief Academic Officer. He was also Professor of Genetics and of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, professor of Biology at MIT (adjunct), and a physician at Massachusetts General Hospital. His scientific research focused on creating a scientific foundation of genomic methods used to discover and validate new drug targets, with a specific focus on type 2 diabetes. For this work he was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Institute of Medicine, and was recognized by the White House in 2013 as a Champion of Change.
David and his wife Jill have two sons, Zachary and Jason, who have attended Camp Becket since 2008. Zachary spent the summer of 2015 as an Assistant Counselor in Ranger Village, and Jason traveled to ICEP Australia.
